Selected Work

Beginning with the Paradise Series (2017–2023), Qian Zhong’s practice investigates female identity and desire through constructed environments and symbolic forms. This body of work establishes a visual and conceptual foundation that later develops into the more psychologically charged and socially reflective Party Series.

Paradise Series (2017–2023)

Qian Zhong’s Paradise Series (2017–2023) reconfigures familiar amusement park elements—slides, swings, and rides—into fluid, animated forms that oscillate between playfulness and unease. These structures intertwine with bodily and symbolic motifs such as lace, hair, umbilical cords, and balloons, forming a visual language through which Zhong examines femininity, desire, and the psychological tensions of contemporary life. While the works evoke a sense of childhood nostalgia and fleeting comfort, they simultaneously suggest instability and underlying disquiet.

Within this series, balloons function as recurring emotional carriers, associated with states such as hope, anxiety, and escape. Positioned within enclosed or transitional environments—including swimming pools, elevators, and corridors—they introduce a spatial condition of liminality. Through these constructed settings, Zhong reflects on themes of containment, belonging, and the boundaries between reality and imagination, transforming familiar environments into subtly disorienting spaces.
